Dennis Kirtley was born in Sunderland in 1924. He received no formal training but  possessed an inborn 
passion for horses which has never left him. He has exhibited in several  northern galleries and his patrons
  include Sir Victor Sassoon and Prince Ali Khan. 
His most famous subjects have included Crepello, St.Paddy, Known Fact and Be My Guest 
(for the Coolmore Stud). He was commissioned by Vaux to paint the first five winners  of the 
Vaux Gold Tankard, then the richest handicap in Europe and by the  Scottish & Newcastle Breweries 
to supply sixteen original works as part of  the design for the Silver Ring Cocktail bar in their 
prestigious Gosforth Park Hotel
